What Makes A High Quality Resume?

Posted by Precious Jewel on

A high quality resume is important because it helps you stand out from other applicants in a competitive job market. A resume is often the first document an employer reviews, so it is important to make a good impression. It is established to highlight your skills, work history, and education to show that you are qualified for the job. We spoke to Keyana Bacon, owner of Interview Resume Ready and Professional Services.

Ms. Bacon, resume and career coach, initially started revising resumes for family and friends, helping them secure employment. A few other services included revising documents for their businesses, college applications and coursework assignments. After realizing there was a need, she started helping others secure steady employment along with providing professional writing assistance. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Business degree in Managerial Marketing with a minor in Human Resource Management from Kent State University and a Masters of Business in Human Resource Management from the University of Toledo. She has 5+ years of HR experience, primarily in the manufacturing industry and most recently at a Fortune 500 automotive company.

1. What makes a resume high quality?

Ms. Bacon says “a high quality resume includes relevant information that reflects your employment qualifications. This means including information that is directly related to the opportunity you are applying for. If you are applying for a role that is not directly related to previous experiences, highlight relevant transferable skills. Too much information may get your resume overlooked.”

2. What is one major error you see on resumes?

“Grammar and spelling errors are typically seen within resumes. Formatting errors are also common. Take advantage of the spelling and grammar check tool in Microsoft Word. I would also suggest having someone proofread your final draft. Another set of eyes may find an error that you didn’t see.”

3. How do I make my resume stand out?

“Three words — highlight performance metrics. This includes identifying key accomplishments, leadership roles, community involvement and other qualities about yourself. Hiring managers want to see that you can provide results and also have a purpose.”
